As a Grand Rapids native and GRPS graduate, I am deeply committed to the success of every child within the Grand Rapids Public Schools district.

UNITE FOR JUSTICE IN EDUCATION

My decision to run for the Grand Rapids Public School Board is deeply rooted in my commitment to the community and the school district, which has shaped me. As a GRPS graduate, I had the privilege to have a wonderful academic education. As a Black Puerto Rican and Cuban American, I also experienced a disconnect from my identity, language, and culture, leading to moments of feeling like I didn't belong. Once I left my neighborhood school, I slowly began to lose pieces of myself because I felt that I needed to fit in, creating doubt in who I was. I didn’t see myself or my experiences reflected in the curriculum, I felt that I didn't have a voice, and I saw that the system was not benefiting everyone the same.

As an educational leader, one of the driving forces behind my candidacy is the realization that not everyone who shares my background has the same opportunities. I am determined to ensure that no student or family has to endure what I did. I want to make sure that our students, families, teachers, and staff have access to the tools, resources, and support they need to succeed. I envision a GRPS where we actively collaborate with the community, ensuring that all voices are heard, honored, and valued. Together, we will transform how decisions are made and co-create a community where everyone belongs.

My personal connection, coupled with my extensive experience in education, equity, and community engagement, uniquely positions me to address the challenges our district faces and work towards meaningful solutions. Throughout my career, I have focused on supporting students and families, promoting inclusive practices, and advocating for equitable policies.

I believe that it takes a village to support our students and families, and I am eager to be a part of that village. Every child in GRPS deserves to be loved, have access to quality education, and be heard. I believe that GRPS can be a place where we listen to and value the voices of our families, students, staff, and community. A district where we advocate for equitable funding and implement policies that promote academic success for all students and families. If elected, I would be honored to serve our students and families, and work towards a district that values diversity, promotes equity, strives for excellence in education, and unites for justice in education.

I ask that you join me to make GRPS a better place!
